With the owners, Miyo (left) and Mitsuko (centre), at the entrance

We visited Sendaitaki Onsen "Umeya Ryokan" in Satsumasendai city. The house was built more than 120 years ago by the grandfather of the current owner Mitsuko.

Miyo (left) and Mitsuko (right) welcomed us with a smile on our arrival. It has been 70 years since Mitsuko married into the family of Umeya Ryokan. When she was younger, a lot of tourists came from Ushibuka and Amakusa (cities in Kumamoto) to stay here for several days and relieved their bodies.

The dressing room is well maintained and clean. There is no locker, you need to keep the valuables safe by yourself while bating. We recommend you to bring a small plastic (waterproof) bag with you.

The touch of the water is exceptionally smooth, and the water contains sulphur. You can enjoy sulphur-flavoured soft water here. Some say soapless water, also the water treats neuralgia, rheumatism, and skin diseases.

In the Sendaitaki Onsen area, there are two water sources, and each onsen uses the mixed water.

A frequent bather Yoshito. He already retired from the job, and currently enjoys working as a volunteer.

Sendaitaki Onsen is known as an onsen loved by Takamori Saigo. He often came here to build a bridge on the Takaghi river, and took a rest in the onsens to refresh the body.
