Obama Onsen "Hama no yu"

We visited Unzen Shiei Kyodo Yokujyo “Hama no yu” in Obamachō Kitahonmachi, Unzen, Nagasaki. It is located at the roadside of Route 57.

The dressing room is big and clean. You can use a locker to keep your valuables safe.

The bathroom is also big. There are two bathtubs, and one is filled with hot water and the other is filled with tepid/warm water. They are deep enough to soak up to your shoulder. Hama no yu has been running 60 years and serves as a communication place for the locals. Local children sometimes ask elderly bathers about something they cannot ask their parents. These days, such relationship can hardly be seen in urban cities; however, it still remains in Hama no yu

Obama Onsen "Hama no yu"

The water type is chloride spring, and the original hot spring temperature of Obama Onsen is 105°C|221°F. In Hama no yu, the temperature of the hot bath is adjusted to 43°C|109.4°F and the tepid/warm bath is adjusted to 40°C|104°F. The water texture is soft and bathing at this onsen can warm you up thoroughly.

Takehisa is 76 years old and comes to Hama no yu at least once in two days. He has been coming to Hama no yu for more than 10 years. He likes salty chloride spring because it can prevent him from feeling a chill after bathing.

Obama Onsen is famous for the longest foot bath in Japan. It is 105 meters long! You might notice that this number is the same as the temperature of the hot spring. And, that’s right, the length derives from the temperature. If you visit Obama Onsen, you should enjoy this long foot bath as well. That is a must-do attraction.
